Classic Board Games

Classic board games have a history to them. Some of them are newer, which is a relative term in the history of gaming. Newer games, in this case, refer to ones that have only been around for a little under a century or so, like Monopoly. Among the plethora of games around today, Monopoly may seem like a long standby, but compared to games like chess or checkers, it’s still just a toddler.

Monopoly was invented in 1935, and has had some interesting historical impacts since then. Perhaps in the most intriguing application of classic board games, Monopoly was used to smuggle real money, as well as compasses and maps to prisoners of war in Nazi hands during World War II. While there are no records of other games aiding in POW escapes, with the history behind some of the more venerable board games certainly have enough gaps to accommodate more stories like that.

For example chess traces its origins to sometime between 1450 and 1500 AD in Europe. It has as rich of an intellectual tradition as any game in history. The depth of the game is truly staggering, as any student of it can vouch for.  Checkers, while younger than chess, is still thought to be several centuries old. These, as well as backgammon, are all prime examples of classic board games.
