Board Games FAQs

What is the oldest board game?

The oldest game in the world is called Senet. It was played in ancient Egypt, and it apparently had a heavy religious significance. It was found in the tombs of the pharaohs.  The game itself all but died out for several millennia, and an ‘official’ rule set cannot be found, but there are some manufacturers who market Senet sets today. The oldest continuously played game in existence is the Chinese game of Go, which features white and black stones played on a board.

I heard that Monopoly was used to free POWs, is that true?

Yes, it is true! Real money was slipped in with the monopoly currency and shipped to prisoners in the Nazi camps. The monopoly games were being included in care packages given to the prisoners. They also included things like compasses, files, and maps which were slipped into the lining of the board. While it is unknown if these escape kits helped any soldiers actually break out of prison, it makes for a good story.

What’s the big deal with chess?

Chess is noted for having an amazingly complex set of possibilities. It has great potential for strategy, and despite the abstract nature of the game, it has been shown to be a good indication of military command and the like. It has been around since the middle ages, and remains very popular today.
