Best Board Games
The best board games are the ones that make you forget how much time you’ve been playing them. Monopoly may be a great board game, but I for one have never played a game of monopoly where I didn’t check the clock. Checkers, on the other hand, can be an engrossing battle of wits that consumes all of a player’s attention. Of course, don’t let Hasbro catch you panning their crown jewel; that would not be… becoming.
And there lies the crux of the issue when you want to talk about the best board games. Best is such a subjective evaluation of anything that it is very difficult to take it seriously. That’s not to say it’s difficult to spot a game that should be excluded from the conversation. But once you’re talking about Risk versus Monopoly versus Chess versus Life, does a ranking of one as the best really serve a useful purpose.
All those games are great games, among the very best board games around, but they all appeal to a different audience. Different tastes will prefer one over the other; and as a matter of taste, there’s rarely an objective leg to stand on in calling your preference the best. It would be a disservice to all the other games to say chess is the best just because it’s the oldest. But it would be an equal disservice to chess to not note the longevity that has helped make it the game it is. That is the nature of a best comparison, it’s most useful to those who aren’t familiar with the subject.
